Debasis Panigrahi

Debasis Panigrahi is a well acclaimed writer of short stories, short fiction, novella and novel in Odia, an Indian classical language. Odia, though a regional language has been accorded the status of a classical language of India due to its great antiquity, rich and diverse literary heritage and a remarkable lexicon containing a very large repertoire of words to express wide and diverse range of emotions.
Sri Panigrahi has nine collections of short stories, three collections of novellas containing seven novellas and one novel to his credit.
He is also a reputed lyricist and has written lyrics for audio and video albums, television and cinema. Collections of his non-fiction and lyrics are being brought out shortly.
A recipient of ‘Odisha Sahitya Academy Award’, his stories have been translated and published in English and several Indian languages and included in the anthologies of best odia stories brought out by ‘Kendra Sahitya Akademi’ and ‘Odisha Sahitya Academy’. He is also a receipient of other major literary awards like Young Writer’s Award given by the prestigious ‘Gangadhar Rath Foundation’, ‘Kadambini Galpa Samman’ given by the popular Odia magazine ‘Kadambini’, ‘Odisha Book Fair Award’, ‘Fakir Mohan Galpa Samman’ (named after the great writer Fakir Mohan Senapati, founder of modern Odia literature and awarded by ‘Utkal Sahitya Samaj’, the oldest and the most prestigious literary organization of Odisha), ‘Fakir Mohan Upanyasa Samman’ given by ‘Fakir Mohan Sahitya Parishad’ and ‘Bijaya Krushna Mohanty Galpa Samman’ (named after the eminent odia story writer Bijaya Krushna Mohanty given by ‘Bhubaneswar Book Fair’, the oldest and the biggest book fair of Odisha) etc.
He has participated in major literature festivals and book fairs of the country like ‘New Delhi World Book Fair’, ‘Delhi Literature Festival’, ‘Think Literature Festival’, ‘Abhivyakti’, a multilingual national literary event organized by ‘Kendra Sahitya Akademi’ at Dibrugarh etc.
Ph.D and M.Phil level research works on various aspects of his literature are underway in various universities. His contribution to Odia literature during the last two decades has also been acknowledged in the histories of modern Odia literature published during last few years.
“Things Left Unsaid”, an English translation of some of his selected stories published by Lifi Publications, New Delhi was released at Delhi Book Fair, 2015. The book has received wide popular appreciation as well as critical acclaim. Eminent and celebrated writers like Ruskin Bond and Manoj Das have also endorsed the book with rave reviews.
His stories are marked by unconventional plot, varied structure and diverse language and literary style, distinctive of each story. Written in a lucid and free flowing language, that often turns lyrical, his stories are mostly written in the tradition of ‘stream of consciousness’ writing. The themes of his stories speak of changing human relationships, conflict of values, ideas and roles in the changing times and the pangs of being middle class and facing the midlife crisis. He is neither judgemental nor impressionistic, combines realism with romanticism quite deftly and artfully, writes with a fine flourish of words and travels wide tracts of imaginative space with equal ease and competence.
He did his Post-graduation in Political Science from Vanivihar, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and M.Phil from the School of International studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Later, he completed his Ph.D in Political Science from Vanivihar, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar.
He is a member of Indian Police Service and lives in Cuttack, an ancient and historical town of eastern India.
